Dear Sir or Madam, My name is Daniil Popov and I’m a fourth-year-student at the Perm State Pedagogical University in Russia. I’m writing to you to inform you that the Kerins Naumov International translation prize gives students of our faculty a good opportunity to improve their English by translating modern texts where a lot of burning issues are reflected. However, there is one very urgent problem in our society which is not covered. That is smoking. To my regret a lot of students smoke and not only from our faculty. So, it seems reasonable to include some anti-smoking text in your annual competition as a sort of preventive step. Probably students would think more about smoking as a harmful habit which has a pernicious influence on them. Thank you for your attention. Yours faithfully, Daniil Popov - Perm Russian Federation All native speakers accept and adapt to their mother tongue fluently with language changing on a seemingly daily basis. It metamorphoses and changes almost invisibly. Today it can be argued that words change their meaning at a faster and faster pace. To this end we approached world-class journalists, politicians,writers, broadcasters teachers, professors and poets as well as ordinary people who have one thing in common. They write in contemporary English, which is their Mother Tongue. Each of them is asked to donate a new piece of writing around 2,000 – 2,500 words of new writing. These works should be no more than one year old. Each piece, on any subject is loaded to a separate website www.kerinsnaumov.com which is used exclusively for the competition. The organisers do not read or vet the texts, which can be take any stand on any topic and have included serious, humourous and often insightful pieces of wonderful journalism and contemporary writing.
